The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are the culmination of Charles and Ray Eames' efforts to create comfortable and handsome seating for the living room, using production techniques that combine technology and craftsmanship. Their heritage dates back to the molded plywood chairs that the Eameses pioneered in the 1940s. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are considered among the most important and collectible furniture designs of the 20th century and are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The first lounge chair and ottoman, produced in 1956, was a birthday gift for their friend Billy Wilder, the Academy Award-winning film director, and made its public debut on Arlene Francis's Home show, which later became the Today show.
